10 Brilliant Horror Movie Monsters You Were Completely Unprepared For

7. Actual Demons - I Am Not A Serial Killer

Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer
IFC Midnight

Released in 2016 to nowhere near wide enough acclaim, I Am Not A Serial Killer is a twisty psychological thriller which leaps between genres and subverts audience expectations whilst offering meaty roles to both Where the Wild Things Are star Max Records and Back to the Future hero/cult film legend Christopher Lloyd.

Maybe that genre description above is misleading.

After all, like the novel of the same name upon which it is based, this indie seems like more of a psychological thriller at first—until the audience is granted their first glimpse of the tar-black demonic presence beneath the local serial killer’s skin.

Never revealed in its entirety until the film's closing scenes, the monstrous demon of I Am Not A Serial Killer is a strangely tragic, oily-skinned ten-foot-tall monstrosity whose appearance shoves the film into full-blown supernatural horror territory. The mid plot genre shift twist is ingenious, but it wouldn't work without the incredible creature design which brings this memorably poignant, but nonetheless chilling, monster to life.
