10 Brilliant Movie Endings That Give You The Finger

6. Speak No Evil (2022)

Speak No Evil
Shudder

Speak No Evil will not only horrify audiences with its ridiculously bleak climax, but it'll leave them feeling angry and frustrated by how avoidable this finale felt, so much so that they might wonder if they actually like the movie. The thing is, this sense of frustration is exactly what writer-director Christian Tafdrup was going for.

He conceived the movie as a twisted satire on how excessive politeness can actually be a harmful thing, and in order to convey this he put together this brutal story, which sees a Danish family going to stay with a Dutch family they met on holiday. Despite the aberrant behaviour of their hosts, the couple fail to stand up to them or just, you know, leave. The consequences of these awful decisions are inconceivably horrendous.

The Dutch couple are actually serial killers, and the boy who they're presenting as their son is a child they kidnapped from their previous victims. In the end, they force the Danish couple to a quarry and proceed to stone them to death in one of the most unpleasant movie scenes in recent memory. After this, they're shown going back on holiday to scope out some new victims, with the Danish couple's daughter now in their backseat; she's had her tongue cut out, preventing her from warning anyone else.

It's a horrid ending, but a great one all the same. Sadly, the Hollywood remake got a sanitized ending that totally missed the point.
