10 Brilliant Movie Endings That Give You The Finger

Dan Gilroy's stunning directional debut is a movie that presents audiences with one of the most disgusting movie characters imaginable and then allows him to win and get away with absolutely everything. It's a movie that might just ruin your day, in other words.

The character in question is Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal, in a skin-crawlingly brilliant performance that should've been nominated for an Oscar), a freelance videographer who films crime scene footage and sells it to news stations. He's an absolute sociopath who only gets more and more insidious as the movie goes along.

He manipulates crime scenes to get the best shots, he causes a car crash that seriously injures a competitor, he coerces a female colleague into a sexual relationship and he even allows multiple people, including his own business partner (Riz Ahmed) to be killed just so that he can get the right footage.

As such, viewers will be desperate to see this wicked man put behind bars, and they'll all be left absolutely gutted by the ending. Bloom gets away with everything and even expands his business. It's a maddening ending and yet, in an era that's been full of scandals related to the misconduct of the mass media - such as the News of the World Phone Hacking Scandal in the UK, which occurred only a few years before this movie's release - it carries a sad but unmistakable ring of truth.
