When the studio over James Bond, EON Productions, learned Warner Bros. was making a remake of Thunderball called Never Say Never Again, they were concerned it could eclipse their own series. Not only would this unofficial Bond title have Sean Connery reprising the role, the main villain would be 007's most iconic foe, Ernst Stavro Blofeld.

At the time, EON Productions was preparing the next James Bond sequel and decided to adapt Ian Fleming's novel, For Your Eyes Only. To derail the production of Never Say Never Again, the company decided to insert Blofeld into the opening scene of their film and kill him off.

Because this was before the time of the Internet, the average viewer were oblivious of this studio squabble and so, were deeply confused and disappointed to see Bond's most recurring villain being meet his end by being dropped into a factory chimney. The fact that this scene has no connection to the plot nor is it mentioned ever again makes it all the more absurd.

Not only was it petty to kill the character off to spite a studio but it was all the more insulting watching Blofeld snuff it in such an unceremonious manner.
