7. "It's Not Safe In The Water!" Movies - Jaws (1975)
Annoying Examples: Tentacles, Piranha, Orca, The Deep, Great White, Anaconda, Alligator, Deep Blue Sea Upon its release,
Jaws became the biggest box office smash of all-time - strange, for a movie about a shark. Still, there was something inherent to Spielberg's movie that captured the public imagination and played on their deepest primal fears: that of the ocean. Given the success of that wonderful movie, then, all kinds of ocean-based monster movies began creeping up, many of which -
Tentacles,Orca, The Deep - failed to reach the heights of the motion picture that inspired it. Over thirty years later, the trend that
Jaws set is still sailing onwards. That's to say, movies like
Anaconda and
Deep Blue Sea attempted to tap into those elements which made
Jaws the goliath that it was, but failed to realise that that movie wasn't just great because it was about a shark, but because of its characters. Not one of the movies that came off of the back of Spielberg's classic seemed to grasp the fact that the movie had to involve us by way of the actually interesting people who go up against the feared creature from the deep. Which is why, to this day,
Jaws is still the only ocean creature feature people really talk about.
