10 Brilliant Scenes in Otherwise Excrutiatingly Awful Movies

5. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace - Duel Of The Fates

The Red Letter Media videos on the Star Wars prequels are often stated as proof positive the films are some of the worst examples of cinema. While Harry Plinkett certainly raises some good points, his view is presented in such an incredibly subjective way, skipping over many other elements, that the constant referencing of it as a destruction of the film seems rather ridiculous. But while that may be true, The Phantom Menace is definitely the weakest entry in the Star Wars series. It does have some exciting sequences, but nearly all are flawed; the podrace is certainly fun, but it goes on a lap too long (particularly in the extended cut that is on all versions of the DVD). However, the final lightsaber battle between the Jedi and Darth Maul is a stand out scene that elevates the entire film. Anakin and Obi-Wan€™s fight in Episode III may have more at stake and Luke vs. Vader in Empire is certainly the most emotive, but on terms of sheer spectacle, the Maul battle wins out. A dizzying fight, with Maul€™s innately cool double bladed saber and the oddly placed, but visually exciting generator room making it the highlight of the movie, it€™s notable for its three dimensional approach, sending the characters flying off pathways and leaping around in all directions.
