10 Brothers Grimm Tales Which Disney Should Adapt
9. The Bremen Town Musicians
Plot: Four ageing animals rejected by their owners decide to run away and head to the town of Bremen. They plan to become musicians, but instead use their talents to take a house from a group of robbers.
The most iconic part of Disney’s animated films usually tends to be the soundtrack, so it would make perfect sense for Disney to adapt one of the most musically-inclined Brothers Grimm tales. The four animals who are travelling to Bremen – a donkey, a hound, a cat and a rooster – can all be turned into memorable leads with big personalities and excellent singing voices. Their relationship is also interesting, as they work together to humiliate the robbers and scare them away.
The main issue with The Bremen Town Musicians is its rather abrupt ending. When they defeat the robbers, the protagonists choose to stay at the house and…. just give up on their dream? The challenges faced for animals trying to become musicians in the human world are worth expanding upon, and you could easily create some amusing commentary on the pitfalls of the music industry and the challenges of celebrity. In addition, there is plenty of potential to deliver messages about prejudice and ageism, especially with animal protagonists who are regarded as no longer useful.
The Bremen Town Musicians features a strong concept and memorable characters, and a good writing team can build on these and create a smart, entertaining musical full of great songs…
