10 Brutal Horror Movie Openings Nobody Saw Coming

8. Not-So-Funfair - It: Chapter Two

Martyrs Movie
Warner Bros.

Now for anyone that's managed to read the colossal tome that is Stephen King's It, this scene wouldn't be all that surprising. But if you just so happen to be one of those moviegoers that's never had the time to thumb through such an imposing book, then you likely were shocked and appalled by this film's opening.

Which sees partners Adrian and Don attempting to enjoy a lovely evening at the Derry funfair, only for them to be viciously assaulted by a group of homophobic thugs. After beating Adrian's face to a bloody pulp, the thugs throw him over the side of the bridge and into the river below, where he's pulled to safety by Pennywise.

Before Adrian is able to make sense of what's going on, Pennywise begins devouring him as Don watches on in horror. A swarm of red balloons begin to fill the air, and both Pennywise and Adrian disappear amongst them.

Overall, it's an incredibly tough scene to watch for multiple reasons, but it really says something when the appearance of a demonic clown that bites someone's heart out through their armpit is a distraction from the very real ugliness of the whole scenario.
