For better or for worse, we would never have seen Mads Mikkelsen swinging a heavy, knotted rope at Sean Connerys testes no, for that, we needed a new Bond, one with enough brutish masculinity to make that kind of torture realistic. Its fortuitous then, that the rebirth of the franchise saw the introduction of one of the finest Bonds yet, played perfectly by Daniel Craig. Craig lent a rough quality to his Bond that was completely absent from previous incarnations of 007. Naturally, Craigs effort was well matched by Mikkelsens commanding performance as the films villain, Le Chiffre. Towards the end of the film, Bond is captured and interrogated by Le Chiffre, who seeks the password to a particularly full Swiss bank account. Le Chiffre has Bond stripped naked and sat on a wooden chair that has had the seats centre cut out. With Bonds privates exposed through the hole in the chair, Le Chiffre swings away at them with a thick rope, the end of which is tied into a bulky knot. Its the sheer simplicity of Le Chiffres method that impresses us the most, as just about every male alive can imagine the pain that each swing of the rope would induce.
