Youd expect a film thats essentially about sadomasochism and torture to feature on this kind of list, and Clive Barkers surrealist adaptation of his own novel of the same name certainly doesnt disappoint in that respect. The mastery of this scene, which sees the films antagonist, Frank, torn apart by an elaborate web of chains, is in the combination of its tone and its practical effects. A series of frenetic close-up shots show hooks sinking into Franks flesh before the camera reveals the final array of chains that pull Franks skin in every direction. Frank strains to say a few words, smiling eerily as he smugly proclaims, Jesus wept! before being torn into a dozen pieces, condemning him to his own hell for the foreseeable future.
