Cancellation

It's been ten years since Tron: Legacy was released, and over the last decade, the prospect of a sequel has been consistently bandied about.

A followup was planned even before Legacy hit cinemas, and in early 2015, it was revealed that director Joseph Kosinski had been hired to bring Tron 3 to life, but a few months later, THR reported that Disney had lost interest in the project.

Years passed, and then - out of the blue - news of a Jared Leto-starring Tron reboot began to swirl, seemingly killing the idea of Tron 3 permanently. However, the reboot then vanished off the grid, and all has been quiet since.

Why It's Not Dead

Just a few days ago, the future of Tron 3 started to look a tiny bit brighter. While being interviewed by ComicBook.com, Kosinski said that talks about doing a third instalment have never really gone away, even inside the "halls" of Disney:

"There's always been an interest since Legacy [for a sequel]. There's always been talk and murmuring of doing another and continuing the story... I think there are fans and people petitioning and pushing to continue it inside the halls of Disney. So I think it could happen. There is, I think, a future for the franchise and I hope they keep making them."

So, not a resounding "it's back on!" but not a dismissal either. With Star Wars being done for now, Disney has space for a major sci-fi franchise on its schedule, and Legacy definitely did well enough to warrant more movies.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
