10 Cancelled Movie Sequels (That Could Still Happen)

Cancellation

Paramount has been trying to turn Star Trek into a top-tier movie franchise ever since the 2009 reboot, but it feels like the general public doesn't care as much as the studio does.

The last entry in the series - 2016's Star Trek Beyond - grossed the least out of the trilogy, and even though producer J.J. Abrams confirmed that Star Trek 4 was going ahead, Deadline later reported that the project had been "shelved".

Why It's Not Dead

But that was in January 2019, and later in the year, some news emerged that was a little more positive. In November, we learned that Noah Hawley - yes, him again - had been beamed in to direct the next Trek movie, with Chris Pine expected to reprise his role as Captain Kirk, and Zachary Quinto to once again appear as Spock.

However, Simon Pegg then came out and said that Hawley's Trek movie might not be a Beyond sequel - seemingly contradicting that November report - and separately, he added that the franchise had "lost momentum".

At this stage, we don't know who to believe, but it's clear that a new Star Trek movie - which might be a Beyond sequel - isn't off the table entirely.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
