10 Canned Sequels We Still Wish Would Be Made

7. Unbreakable 2

In 1999 M. Night Shyamalan captivated audiences with The Sixth Sense, a spine-tingling paranormal thriller with a surprise ending that grossed nearly $300 million at the box office.

Shyamalan €™s The Sixth Sense was a remarkable film in a number of ways, and Shyamalan took his Sixth Sense star and his dark and paranormal brand of storytelling and prepped for another film. Shyamalan€™s much anticipated follow-up was Unbreakable, again starring Bruce Willis, a film about a man who survives a train wreck only to discover that he is, in fact, unbreakable. This makes him a super hero of sorts, but not in the traditional cape and tights way. A mysterious character named Elijah Price, played by Samuel L. Jackson, figures this out, and things get interesting. Bruce Willis was still on top of the box office at this time, and while Unbreakable was a success, there are a number of reasons why it didn€™t perform as well as The Sixth Sense. In Sense, the twist at the end was a Crying Game moment. Audiences left the theater shaking their heads in wonderment, having been so carefully manipulated by Shyamalan and his remarkable storytelling. With Unbreakable, expectations were so high that little Shyamalan could have done would match the power of The Sixth Sense. The film, while a disappointment to some, remains perhaps the best of Shyamalan€™s post-Sense flicks. And talk has persisted over the years about a sequel. As recently as December of last year, Jackson told the Huffington Post that an Unbreakable trilogy had originally been planned. €œI mean, he hasn't made a really good movie since ," Jackson said, when asked if a sequel would be made. And he gave no indication that a sequel was in development. Unbreakable is perhaps the one film on this list wherein a sequel after so many years might make perfect sense. It is also conceivable that revisiting this film could be a boost to the careers of both Shyamalan and Willis. There are myriad places that Shyamalan could take the characters of the unbreakable David Dunn and the mysterious Elijah Price, and Unbreakable 2 might yet become a reality.
