10 Casting Decisions The Dark Tower Film Must Get Right
9. Father Donald Callaghan
Father Callaghan is a character from one of Stephen King's other novels, Salem's Lot. The vampire hunting priest turned alcoholic vagrant arrives in Mid-World after dying in his own world. Five years later and he's built a new life, becoming an ally to Roland and his group when he encounters them on their journey to the tower. James Gallery played Father Callaghan in the 1979 adaptation of Salem's Lot, but his death in 2001 means there's no chance of him reprising the role for The Dark Tower. In his place the film needs someone who can be exhausted and downtrodden at times, but also determined, resourceful and powerful when the need strikes. Ideal Casting: John Lithgow The veteran actor is perfect for the worn out priest, and he can also be a powerful on-screen presence as he proved with his role in Dexter. Back Up Casting: Brendan Gleeson He's played a priest before and is very good at playing characters with a resigned air and wounded dignity. The only problem with this might be his inability to disguise his broad Irish accent. But then, he's an actor, so that shouldn't be a problem.
