4. T-Rex - Jurassic Park
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5Co3A3fLBo This is the film that, above all others, is a landmark for the photorealistic capabilities of visual effects, for it pretty much single-handedly inspired the likes of George Lucas and Peter Jackson to have faith in these burgeoning tools, and boldly employ them on their new projects. While the T-Rex in Jurassic Park is a combination of animatronics and digital compositing, the beauty is that to the naked eye its usually impossible to tell which is which, except in a few close-ups. Though we of course have no actual footage of dinosaurs on film, the scientific community has conceded that, by and large, this is a definitive depiction of what they would pretty much look like, which is essentially the grandest praise you can award a film like this. Jurassic Park was a huge hit, and growing up, I always assumed the T-Rexs were simply giant animatronics; its all a testament to how well Spielberg harnessed these tools, and how can convincing a storyteller he is (when he wants to be).
