1. More Focus On Peter's Relationships, Less Talking Everywhere Else
You might think that this stands in opposition to the previous point and an example of attempting to have your cake and eat it. It's honestly not The Amazing Spider-Man 2's main problem is bloat, so there's plenty you could cut away without affecting the necessary character-driven scenes. Indeed, you might even make them more efficient and poignant. As already referenced, Marc Webb's work on 500 Days Of Summer showed he had a knack for smaller character moments, and it's presumably this skill (and not the fact his name is perfect) that got him this directing gig. So the other side of the coin to the previous point is that you do need these character scenes, and just because Spider-Man puts more bums on seats than Peter Parker, it doesn't mean you can just drop that aspect of the film. However, despite his large presence here, Peter often took a back seat in the film's proceedings for example, it's a nice character scene when Harry and Peter skim stones on a beach, but knowing there was a black van watching them just a few metres away distracted from the good work carried out by Garfield and DeHaan. Even the Stone-Garfield relationship was slightly nixed throughout in favour of goofy scenes that really didn't add very much witness when Peter confronts Gwen at the Oxford University office, and you've probably scene the nadir of these superfluous asides. For the next one, there's an argument for using Parker sparingly, but giving his scenes more focus the reason (AGAIN, HUGE SPOILER) Gwen's death meant so much is because we'd had lots of really nice moments in the previous film, and even the slight stumbles in this film before the climactic scene couldn't override that.
