10 Changes That Would Have Improved The Amazing Spider-Man 2

3. A Proper Post-Credit Sequence

Carrying on from the previous point, a post-credit sequence would've really allowed Webb to streamline his film, and would've saved the final act from becoming as clunky as it did. Let's face it €“ after (MASSIVE, HONKING SPOILER ALERT) Gwen Stacey's brutal death, the film could've wrapped up there and then. But instead, we had roughly a half-hour of extra action, entirely to set up for the next instalment. More so than any other part of the film, this was a nakedly transparent attempt at franchise building. Clearly, building a franchise is no bad thing €“ it's great that Spider-Man films are being made, and it's refreshing to see such ambition in building a blueprint for the next few efforts. But really, this was too long-winded and came at just the wrong time €“ by refusing to wrap up on something of a downer ending, it inadvertently cheapened Gwen's death, and stuffed what could've been a plausible plot for the third film (how Spidey got his groove back) into the final 20 minutes. It would've been better to streamline those scenes involving Harry, Rhino and Mr. Fiers into a credit sequence, and eschew Rhino's turn in the final moments. Perhaps it would've been good to put adopt a show, don't tell philosophy or vice versa €“ just showing us Giamatti coming across Rhino's suit would've been enough to push up the hype for the next movie, but instead they've played their hand early and robbed themselves of a potential anticipation-builder for the third film. After all, we all know who's going to win that fight when it cuts to black, right? Wouldn't it have been better to leave something to the imagination, trailers be damned?
