The internet was awash with stories of boycotts, bans, rating changes and withdrawals not too long after director Bill Condon revealed there was to be an LGBTQ character in the film during an interview with Attitude Magazine.

Condon said of Gaston's sidekick LeFou (played by the excellent Josh Gad): “LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston,” He then went on to say: "But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.”

Since that interview and the film's opening weekend, there are tens, if not hundreds of articles online debating how influential or big of a deal the moments showing same sex flirtation or dancing actually were. In reality, the dancing scene was a blink-and-miss-it affair, where the dancers are paired up and the camera swiftly moves onto other couples in the crowd.

Elsewhere, Gad's excellent fawning over Gaston are better earlier in the film when he's calming Gaston down, giving him neck massages and staring longingly at his figure across the bar. But the actual "gay scene"? Fleeting.
