10 Changes That Make Beauty And The Beast Worse Than The Original
1. It Does Not Improve On The Original
The overall impression of the film from critics, writers and internet opinion-ists is that the film is faithful to the original - which is true. But whilst everything's there that should be, it feels off somehow and doesn't match the splendour of the original.
The minor niggles, changes and inconsistencies with plot and character build up to something very annoying come the end of the film. The large number of added songs do not meet the same standard as those composed by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman. The added 45 minutes really starts to drag once you're past the 90 minute mark and add narrative details that patronize the audience rather than appeal to them.
And yet Disney can do it. Look at Enchanted: the 2007 blockbuster that affectionately remixed everything Disney had put out in the prior seventy years and made a hybrid animation and live action film that made around $430,000,000 from box office and DVD/Blu-Ray sales. That was in the same hybrid genre: a musical fantasy romantic comedy(!) Ten years later and we've got a new Beauty and the Beast that is a pale imitator of its 1991 animated version.
