10 Changes The Oscars Desperately Needs To Make
2. Bring Back The Tradition Of The Previous Year's Winners Giving Out The Next Year's Awards
This is a fairly inconsequential one, but it’s a tradition so long standing that it’s sad to see it slowly getting pushed away… and for no proper reason, too.
The tradition goes that the Best Actor/Actress winner of the previous year returns to present the Award for the opposite gender the following year. The same goes for the Supporting categories and the previous year’s Best Director does the same.
This year, last year’s winners were invited back extremely last minute, and they didn’t follow the tradition properly. Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell presented Best Actress, while Gary Oldman and Allison Janney presented Best Actor. The Supporting categories were hosted by random hosts.
It’s small and doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things, but it’s always nice to see the winners of the year before return to pass the mantle to the current year’s crop of talent. Apparently the Academy planned to change this tradition in order to bring in higher calibre presenters. This is a bad idea.
