3. Agent Smith - The Matrix Resurrections

Rebooting such an iconic system as that of The Matrix franchise was set to be an unenviable task from the get-go. But the news of a lack of original Agent Smith actor Hugo Weaving being pumped back into this cyber world made an already tall order even harder to pull off by the time The Matrix Resurrections was officially downloaded last year.

With Weaving not being able to sign on the dotted line due to scheduling conflicts, the decision to install Jonathan Groff as the new and improved version of the once stoic indomitable force of the flicks ultimately didn't take off in the way Lana Wachowski would've hoped.

Outside of the odd impressive throwdown with Keanu Reeves' Neo and nostalgic flashback to his Weaving ways, Smith finds himself being largely overshadowed by new big bad The Analyst (Neil Patrick Harris) and even oddly joining forces with his one-time mortal enemy to take down said antagonist late in the day.

Largely neutering a once-single-minded programme destruction, the constant reminders via jump cuts of Weaving's former intimidating presence only hammered home further just how much of a wasted opportunity Smith's disappointing return ultimately turned out to be.
