3. Deadpool - X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
"The merc with a mouth" would obviously go to loud mouth Ryan Reynolds. Deadpool (Wade Wilson) gained his powers by being part of the Weapon X program. First appearing in 1990 in New Mutants #98, penned at the Teen Titans version of Deathstroke. In 'Origins' Wade Wilson was apparently killed by Victor Creed (Sabretooth) near the start, but in reality he became part of Stryker's experiments. Towards the end he is revealed as Weapon XI, a play on Wolverine being Weapon X. Stryker calls him Deadpool due to him gaining powers from the mutants (psychic blasts from Cyclops, healing power from Wolverine). The film version of Deadpool was overloaded with powers as an adversary to Wolverine- The fight scene at Five Mile Island is bogged down in lazy CGI, but at least Reynold's doesn't have to say anything.
The problem is that I struggle with Ryan Reynolds as an actor anyway, he can take on more serious roles, but all too often slips into slapstick and cruising by on a smile of pearly white teeth. He butchered 'The Green Lantern' and brought the same to the role of Deadpool, sewing his mouth shut was the best thing 'X-Men Origins' did. The script for a spin-off Deadpool film is still in the works and Reynolds is STILL attached to reprise his role. We have been promised that the film will break the fourth wall, just as the comic character is known for; while many people can't wait...I definitely can!
