Marie is a pretty important character in the first Bourne movie, a German woman who acts as Jason Bourne's accomplice throughout the film. She drives him to Paris and learns all about his situation, eventually getting caught up in it as assassins come after Bourne.

She’s a great sidekick who's able to survive the whole ordeal and who becomes Bourne's love interest, and in the final scene, Jason reunites with Marie and the two share a warm hug. Cut to credits. After all that, Marie returns in the opening of The Bourne Supremacy, but almost immediately a Russian agent comes after them and Marie is suddenly shot and killed.

The moment is played up to good effect and it impacts Jason's mindset for the rest of the movie, but it retroactively gives that reunion scene in the first one a much darker tone. After all, everything they go through together just leads up to her horrifying and sudden death not long after, and it's pretty much entirely Bourne's fault. Poor Marie.
