10 Classic American Exploitation Movies

9. Satan's Sadists (1969)

128120 An outlaw motorcycle gang called The Satans roam the Southwest deserts of the US looking for trouble. They come across two lovers and beat the man and rape the woman before killing them. They put the bodies into a car and drive it off a cliff. Meanwhile people are converging upon a diner - Johnny a Vietnam vet who has been picked up whilst hitch hiking by a couple called Chuck and Nora. There is also a waitress at the diner called Tracy who is late because she was doing college work. Her boss Lew chews the fat with Johnny about how desolate the desert is. Tracey and Johnny both express a desire to break free from their surroundings. The Satans arrive at the cafe and swiftly make a nuisance of themselves - they harass Tracy and a female gang member starts go go dancing. Lew's had enough and he pulls a gun. The Satans beat him up and take his gun. They take Nora, Chuck and Lew outside. Nora is raped and all three of them are killed. Johnny and Tracy get into her dune buggy and flee. They are pursued deep into the desert by the gang. The dune buggy breaks down and thy have to hot tail it on foot to the next town. The Satans come across a bunch of female campers and party with them. Gina, a female member, is jealous of Anchor's (the gang leader) attention paid to the ladies and drives off a cliff. A rattlesnake kills a gang member as he tries to track Johnny and Tracy. He dies. A gang member called Firewater goes looking for him and comes back to camp to find Anchor has gone insane and killed the female campers. They fight and Firewater leaves Anchor for dead. He finds Tracy and Johnny but during a fight he is killed by a landslide. Anchor has a go at the couple but Johnny kills him with a switch blade. The couple get on Anchor's bike and get the hell out of there. Al Adamson, the director, does not have a reputation for making good films but nevertheless, there is good fun to be had in the film. Okay, there is a lot of filler and meaningless dialogue to pad it out but when the nasty stuff starts happening it IS nasty. Fans of exploitation cinema will appreciate the loving care and hard work Adamson has put into the production but mainstreamers will find it dull, cheap and boring. The actors in the bike gang are so obscure they have a dose of gritty realism about them. Russ Tamblyn puts in a delightfully deranged performance as Anchor the chief baddie. It is worth watching it for his against type performance alone! A little more sadistic than the average renegade biker flick, Satan's Sadists is a shining beacon of the genre.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
