1. The Brothers Karamazov
Another entry for Dostoevsky, the Brothers Karamazov is one of the most acclaimed works of fiction ever created. Dealing with themes such as God, religion, morality, free will, and fate, set against a backdrop of a murder mystery, the Brothers Karamazov would be an extremely difficult but potentially mesmerizing film. The novel follows the family Karamazov, primarily the three sons of Fyodor Karamazov: the intellectual Ivan, the sensualist Dmitri, and the likable Alyosha. The plot often goes off on philosophical tangents but the actual narrative is fairly straightforward as it deals with the murder of the Fyodor and the ensuing investigation. Filled to the brim with fascinating psychological and philosophical ideas, the Brothers Karamazov would certainly be a challenge for any filmmaker but if streamlined and put in the right direction, it could be one of the most intriguing films ever made.
