10 Classic Britsploitation Horror Films

10. The Playbirds (1978)

the playbirds A religious maniac killer is murdering the beautiful girls who appear in Playbird magazine. Police realise that the latest victim has a number written on the back of her head. Investigations show that she was the centre in an occult themed spread in a magazine which was the same date as the number found on her head. Not wanting to arouse suspicions, the police send in their own mole in to the pornography business and guess who it is? Mary Millington! I'm sure she would be inconspicuous for all of 5 seconds! Of course she wins the coveted role of the next centrefold and her police comrades begin to worry about her safety. A rather nasty little film, made to showcase the real life talents of the real life Playbird magazine, the whole thing is a product of porn baron David Sullivan's diseased mind. The women are brutally murdered and no one seems to care about it - not even the police. They are squalid fodder to be there just to be killed horribly. Of course, Mary Millington, an undercover police woman takes to the seedy porn underworld like a duck to water. There is some lame nonsense about witchcraft, and the ending is excessively mean spirited and lurid. One for serious scholars of 70s British filth only.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
