10 Classic Films That Should Be Remade
6. Breakfast at Tiffany's
Part of the appeal of watching breakfast at Tiffany's from a modern perspective is to have a glimpse into the charm of a bygone era that feels elegant and graceful. Its use of music, style and some wonderfully charismatic performances - most notably Audrey Hepburn in the lead role - give it this classic feeling of beauty and simplicity.
With that being said, there are a few issues that sour the film, most notably Mickey Rooney's character of Mr Yunioshi, which is so unbelievably racist that it will make watching painful at times.
However more from that, there are some compelling topics brought about in the original novel by Truman Capote that the film only eludes to subtly. For example our leading character Holly is essentially a call-girl who uses her looks and charm to get money from people through her conversation and company. Capote is even quoted as intending for the lead to feel like an "American Geisha" and wanted her appeal to come from her presence as a sexual being as opposed to just her charm.
A less tactful approach to this subject matter could bring about some very compelling development for the character of Holly Golighty that addresses some powerful themes of gender politics and feminism, thus giving it a very relevant position in a modern climate.
