10 Classic Halloween Movies To Watch This October 2021
6. Nosferatu: Symphony Of The Night
Because Nosferatu was an unauthorised film adaptation of Dracula, Bram Stoker's family did everything they could to have the movie cancelled or censored.
It's a good thing they didn't succeed since Nosferatu went on to become not just a classic horror but one of the most influential films ever made. Expressionist actor, Max Schreck, is so astounding at portraying Count Orlok, the director, FW Murnau, was accused of hiring a real vampire for the role!
Even though Schreck's physical performance is what Nosferatu is best-known for, Murnau's meticulous direction can be seen in every frame. His usage of shifting shadows is just as effective at heightening tension as Orlok himself.
Because it was released in 1922, Nosferatu will obviously come across as dated by today's standards. But if you want to watch a vampire story before Dracula mythos became cliched and trite, Nosferatu is worth a look.
Considering this 99-year-old film can leave viewers feeling uncomfortable while brand-new slashers can't just proves how well-crafted Nosferatu is. Even if you don't find Murnau's magnum opus scary, any horror fan should appreciate its artistry and see how its influenced its entire genre.
