3. The Haunting (1963)
Adapted from (in my opinion) the greatest horror novel of all time by Robert Wise (genius director of such films as West Side Story, The Sound of Music and Star Trek the Motion Picture -- he also edited Citizen Kane!), 1963's The Haunting brings it like few horror films ever have or will. Prepare yourself for a bone-chilling experience as you journey into the troubled mind of psychic spinster Nell. The isolated and loony Nell volunteers to partake in a scientific study of the paranormal at the haunted Hill House. What happens when she arrives at the accursed mansion is the stuff nightmares are made of. Wise uses brilliant sound design, editing and practical effects to make the evil presence haunting Hill House tangible and shocking. If you like horror movies and you haven't seen it yet go watch it. Go now! (well -- finish the list then go watch it).
