2. The Wicker Man (1973)
Forget the Neil LaBute lunatic Nic Cage-punching-women-in-a-bear-suit atrocity of a remake, we're talking the original stone-cold masterpiece that is 1973's The Wicker Man. This musical horror comedy centres around a stodgy, possibly virginal, middle-aged puritanical Bobby who travels to a remote island village to investigate a missing person's report. The isle houses a free love practicing, song & dance having, hippie pagan commune led by the inscrutable Lord Summerisle (Hammer Horror kingpin Christopher Lee). Cultures collide as the Bobby's fervent Christianity crashes headlong into sacrifice-loving paganism. The Wicker Man must be seen by horror fans because of its unique atmosphere and flawlessly executed story. Be warned -- the final moments are among the most harrowing ever put to film.
