10 Classic Movie Details You Never Noticed
6. That Pulp Fiction Reference - Die Hard with a Vengeance
The criminally underrated Die Hard with a Vengeance has a fun yet easily missed nod to a defining film featuring its two lead actors that was released just a year prior - Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction.
After John McClane (Bruce Willis) and Zeus (Samuel L. Jackson) are forced to work together, McClane tells a frustrated Zeus, "Could be worse. I was working on a nice fat suspension, smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo."
At first glance this may simply sound like your typical John McClane action hero wise-crack, but this is actually a nod to the song from The Statler Brothers, "Flowers on the Wall."
The song was featured in Pulp Fiction during the scene where Bruce Willis' Butch Coolidge is driving around and crosses paths with Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames).
Moments before their eyes meet, we can hear Butch singing along to the tune as it plays in his car, including the lyrics "Smokin' cigarettes and watchin' Captain Kangaroo." There you have it.
