10 Classic Movies Extended Only By Stupid Villain Decisions
3. The Aliens Invade A Planet They're Allergic To - Signs
M. Night Shyamalan is a master of the plot twist, even if it didn't really make sense for Bruce Willis to be a ghost in The Sixth Sense (did it not occur to him that can't eat or go to the toilet?). Even by Shyamalan's plot twist standards though, Signs pulls out an almighty one that changes the course of the film; it's just a shame it undermines the villains completely. The aliens are allergic to water. That's a fabulously simple piece of writing, if not anticlimactic, but it does pose one question: why on Earth did the aliens invade a planet that was 70% water? There are over 32o million trillion gallons of water on Earth, and as our British viewers can testify, it can unexpectedly rain a lot in certain parts of the world. These aliens chose to land not in the middle of the desert, but near a lake, and set up camp near the home of a little girl, who happens to be obsessed with water; she leaves glasses of the stuff around the house, that's like attacking a minefield. These are beings capable of building ships that can travel across the universe, picking out destinations for them to visit, and safely land in. "They weren't to know" is not an excuse: they really should have read up about the Earth before deciding to come here.
