As any reader of the Iron Man comics will know, The Mandarin is Tony Stark’s oldest and greatest foe, his archenemy if you will, so his transition to the big screen naturally had a lot to live up to and sadly director Shane Black managed to piss off more than a few fans with the way he handled the villain’s introduction.

In an attempt to update the character for more modern times, it turned out the broadcast jamming terrorist teased throughout the movie is actually a cover-up – a washed up British actor completely oblivious as to ‘The Mandarin’s’ actions hired as front for Aldrich Killian and Advanced Idea Mechanics’ nefarious means.

Although some appreciated the twist and have praised Black’s attempts to steer away from The Mandarin’s stereotypically Fu Manchu qualities in the comics, it still undermined the impact of Iron Man’s most infamous adversary.
