10 Classic Movies That Are (If Anything) Underrated

6. The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King

Why Do People Think It€™s Overrated? You'll struggle to find someone who in their heart of hearts actually thinks The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy is overrated. It's a landmark, not just in the fantasy genre, but cinema in general, telling an epic story with absolutely no creative concessions made and revolutionising the way studios made blockbusters (for both good and bad) in the process. But, when taken individually, The Return Of The King tends to get a lot of flack. It's the biggest of the three in terms of both length and scope, which gives it a lot more opportunity to be called overblown, rather than expansive. And those endings; it apparently has, like, ten bazillion endings each more perfunctory than the last. Why Isn€™t It? If The Return Of The King didn't have a reunion of the Fellowship, and Aragorn become King, and the hobbits return to the Shire, and see Frodo head out to the Undying Lands, all before giving Sam his happy ever after, audiences would have felt short-changed. This is the finale of a nine-hour epic. It can't be just wrapped up with a quick "it's over" and a happy smile. The main problem, though, is that the film was that much more successful than the previous two, making more money than any other film in the series (even the inflation-aided The Hobbit) and winning all of the thirteen Oscars it was nominated for, creating the illusion it was somehow Ent strides ahead of the others. It's not. Because they're all awesome; after all, much of that praise came from the cumulative assessment of Peter Jackson's achievement (until the last film it wasn't clear if he'd actually pull it off).
