10 Classic Movies That Are (If Anything) Underrated
5. Skyfall
Why Do People Think Its Overrated? Goldfinger is the definitive 007 movie. It pretty much defined the Bond formula and gave the least campy entry of franchise icon Sean Connery's tenure. While the series has produced plenty of great films (in amongst some serious duds too), they've all had their drawbacks: You Only Live Twice has the iconic Blofeld reveal, but also feels a little too like Austin Powers; Goldeneye brought Bond back after Dalton failed to connect with audiences, but is a rather empty film in itself. But it's hard to fault Goldfinger. So yeah, nothing's going to be that good ever again. Why Isnt It? Here's a twist bigger than anything Spectre has in store; Skyfall is the best Bond. And even if you prefer Goldfinger, it's hard to argue with what makes its modern counterpart so awesome. For a long time a Bond movie would make money by virtue of being a Bond movie - even A View To A Kill, widely regarded as the worst movie in the series, wound up making five times its production budget. It's those types of returns that make aiming at anything higher than a fun movie a rather unnecessary endeavour. Well, until Casino Royale showed even more money could be made by making a genuinely great movie. Skyfall takes that further, using the fiftieth anniversary to go introverted. The film is questioning whether James Bond, as both a character and what he represents culturally, is still relevant, answering with a resounding yes in a mash-up of old series traits and crisp, new filmmaking. So not only did Sam Mendes and Roger Deakins create a tense, beautiful movie, they also delivered the first Bond movie that actually had (gasp) subtext.
