10 Classic Movies You Didn't Know Were Slammed By Critics
9. The Shining
It has to be said, of all the people who hated Stanley Kubrick's The Shining when it was first released, Stephen King had the most right to be annoyed. After all, Kubrick had radically altered King's novel and produced a film that barely resembled the source material. While most movie fans today acknowledge that this was probably a good thing, the same couldn't be said for some critics when The Shining first came out in 1980. Variety were among those who had no time for Kubrick's brand of horror, accusing him of destroying "all that was terrifying about Stephen King's bestseller, going on to add, "Shelley Duvall transforms the warm sympathetic wife of the book into a simpering, semi-retarded hysteric." Today, The Shining is regarded as one of the greatest horror movies of all time, although Shelley Duvall - emotionally battered by Kubrick throughout the production - no doubt took little consolation in being nominated for a Worst Actress award at the Razzies.
