10 Classic Movies You Didn't Know Were Slammed By Critics
6. Casablanca
Another classic black and white movie which virtually everyone loves today, Casblanca was described by a reviewer at the New Statesman as a "love story that takes us from time to time into the past is horribly wooden, and clichés everywhere lower the tension." It's an interesting judgement of a film that has become known as the quintessential Hollywood romance, while Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman delivered one of the best performances of their careers. Far from being wooden, their dialogue sparkles throughout and it is one of the most-quoted films of all time for good reason. New Statesman weren't the only ones to take the contrarian view of Casablanca - Time magazine also hated the film, saying that "nothing short of an invasion" could have added much to it.
