7. Psycho
If Predator has secured a place as one of the greatest films in the history of action cinema, then Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho goes one step further - not only is it regarded as one of the greatest horror movies of all time, it's also one of the first slasher movies ever made, establishing a genre which has been going strong ever since. With Psycho, Hitchcock seemed to condense everything that was good about his precise shooting and editing style into one film, crafting a masterpiece of suspense which many directors have attempted to mimic but few have achieved. This status wasn't perceived by everyone back in 1960, with the Observer standing as one of the few publications which didn't immediately recognise its greatness. "I couldn't give away the ending if I wanted to, for the simple reason that I grew so sick and tired of the whole beastly business that I didn't stop to see it," said reviewer CA Lejeune, committing the cardinal sin of reviewing a film without having the decency of watching the entire thing.
