10 Classic Special Effects That Put Modern Hollywood To Shame

1.The Thing (1982)

John Carpenter€™s beloved remake of 1951€™s The Thing from Another World is considered by many fans to be one of the best horror films ever made. One of the reasons that it is so popular is because of the extraordinary creature effects that were designed and created by the very talented Rob Bottin (who was hospitalized with exhaustion due to all the hard work he did on set). The creatures that Bottin created were nothing short of fabulous and provided enough nightmare fuel for viewers to last them a lifetime. Highlights include a human head sprouting spider-like legs and scurrying across the floor, infected blood jumping out of a Petri dish, someone€™s chest growing a mouth (complete with sharp teeth) and biting another person€™s arms off, and a number of hardcore human/alien creatures running around terrorizing the poor guys struggling to survive. Bottin work has had an influence on many others (especially the makers of the Dead Space video game series as many of the monsters that appear on these games look a lot like those from The Thing) and his creations for this film blow away any other movie monsters, especially the ones created via CGI. His work here is nothing short of genius and it is a true shame that he didn€™t win-or was even nominated-for an Oscar as a result. There you have them folks.
