10 Cloverfield Lane Trailer Breakdown: 15 Clues You Need To See
12. The Jigsaw
Not content with family board games, the trio also work on putting a jigsaw together. It's more low-tech entertainment and one of the earliest indicators in the the trailer that there's something restrictive going on. Interestingly, note that the puzzle is called Cat Fish - no doubt a rather coy wink towards the Cloverfield monster's aquatic origins. Speaking of clues, anybody else think the whole jigsaw thing is a metaphor for how the entire Cloverfield enterprise is built on being a puzzle for fans to put together? I do wonder, with only two months to release, if we'll get an ARG similar to the original or, in keeping with the more standard shooting style, a more muted, name-driven publicity push. Probably the latter. The jigsaw also works as a nice way for the trailer (and probably the movie) to introduce the audience to the various character types - John Goodman is setting up the problem, Winstead is methodically trying to solve it, working her way through all the pieces, and Gallagher Jr. simply trying to smash his way to victory. So... things don't look good for him.
