10 Cloverfield Lane Trailer Breakdown: 15 Clues You Need To See
11. Boredom Sets In
After the puzzles and music make everything seem so nice, things begin to change a little - Winstead and Gallagher Jr.'s characters begin look increasingly apathetic to their surrounds, flitting through life disinterested. It's the first non-subtext sign in the trailer something's up, but more importantly tells us that, while what comes later has an impact, tensions are already rising. A couple of observations here. Winstead isn't actually reading that magazine - as revealed in a later shot, she's drawing/writing on it. Also note the VHS Gallagher Jr.'s holding - Cannibal Airlines. We know ol' Clovie eats people, so there could be a link there. Or are things darker in this film than we thought? One of my favourite moments in the trailer is the bit where Winstead and Goodman are making sandwiches. Something about the mundanity of the act, and how the spread they're using just dips off their knives carlessly, as the music increases is great. And nothing better shows that emergent boredom. The jukebox pops up again, which suggests that music won't just be important in the trailer; as a focal point of life in the bunker, its reappearance suggests this movie may boast a great soundtrack. Another Home Sweet Home sign too. Oh the irony.
