13. The Game Of Life

The first portion of the trailer focuses on the film's three characters playing various puzzles, projecting a semblance of normality. Notice also the very homely backdrop and mise en scene, which furthers the sense of normality. First up is the The Game Of Life, something that also backs up the everyday side to the first half of events and, on rewatch, draws strong contrast to the character's situation - they're unable to live a normal life.

Here's our first look at the actors - John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher Jr. Now that's a cast, especially given how secretive/low budget this film is. At this point, they appear like a very nice family unit, happily playing at life (ha!). One key thing is that Gallagher Jr.'s character has a sling throughout the trailer, which can mean several things - there's already been conflict in the room before, or perhaps he's a new inhabitant, getting injured in the outside world. Or maybe he just slipped on a wet patch.
