10 Comic Book Characters That Were Slaughtered By Hollywood

2. Ghost Rider

A flame skulled, leather clad biker determined to rid the world of evil should be remarkably easy to bring to the screen; fans have thus far been treated to two disappointing films starring Nicolas Cage. Ghost Rider is a recipe for success; he is darker than most Marvel heroes, yet his adaptation to screen was poorly received by fans and critics alike. The sombre tones of the character were replaced with generic clichés of comic book films; much like the Fantastic Four, this film targeted a younger audience, and this led to a number of compromises that significantly weakened the character. The penance stare and tendency towards violence make Ghost Rider the archetypal antihero, but he has been so poorly represented on the big screen that it is hard to see any production companies touching this gold mine of a franchise due to the irrevocable damage inflicted by Cage€™s film. As a rather unique character it is unsurprising that Ghost Rider€™s translation to the big screen has been tumultuous; there are very few characters with which he can truly be compared to, so there were almost no foundations on which to build the franchise. Regardless of this mitigating factor, the adaptation to screen has been a complete and utter disservice to an incredible character.
