10 Comic Book Movie Characters Who Face Uncertain On-Screen Futures

6. Black Adam & Shazam

Ultimately, these two have themselves to blame for their own demise. Although that may sound harsh, taking into account the major DC universe reshuffle and revitalisation overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran, it struggles to be seen where Black Adam and Shazam fit into future proceedings due to their dismal receptions and box-office returns.

Gunn’s announcement of his hotly awaited cinematic clean slate titled 'Chapter 1: Gods & Monsters' saw plans for a host of new and shiny projects put into place, but the formerly mentioned Black Adam and Shazam were nowhere to be seen and there’s a reason for that.

Fronted by The Rock having been a passion project of his for years, Black Adam was an incredibly anti-climactic on-screen debut for the illustrious anti-hero. More than enough money was spent marketing the movie, as you couldn’t walk down the street without seeing his face.

But unfortunately for him, nowhere near enough people went to watch it even with the inclusion of Henry Cavill’s Superman making his now-confirmed final appearance as the character. The same, if not similar, could be said for Shazam!’s sequel, Fury of the Gods.

Although their on-screen characters' futures look rather bleak for now, there is optimism to be had from both The Rock and Zachary Levi off-screen. Both men have announced their hopes to don the spandex once again in the future, but with how meticulous and organised Gunn is, one can’t help but think their returns would’ve been confirmed by now… yikes.
