10 Comic Book Movie Mistakes Confirmed By The Creators
1. Casting Tilda Swinton As The Ancient One - Doctor Strange
Doctor Strange opened a whole new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2016. There had been nothing like it before, as the movie brought the mystic arts into the realms of the franchise along with several ridiculously powered characters.
For all of its praise, as it became one of the few MCU movies to receive an Oscar nomination, there was one huge area of contention that fans took exception to. Namely, this was the casting of a white actor for the role of a typically Asian character from the comics.
Fans complained that Marvel Studios ‘whitewashed’ the Ancient One in 2016 with the casting of Tilda Swinton, and though she did a wonderful job in the role, Kevin Feige has since agreed with these fans that the decision was in fact a mistake.
The want to subvert expectations and do something different with a character is fair enough, and has worked plenty of times in the past, but the Godfather of the MCU now regrets not finding a way to achieve that while casting an Asian actor in the role.
