10 Comic Book Movie Moments That Felt More Like Horror Movies

10. Masked Dorian Tyrell (The Mask)

The Mask comic books are actually quite dark. They contain a lot of extreme violence and gore and the creation of the main character was influenced by characters such as Batman's arch-enemy the Joker and Jekyll and Hyde. So, when the Mask movie came to be in 1994, it was something of a surprise to those people familiar with the source material to see Jim Carrey cast in the role and the movie presented as an outright comedy. Those unfamiliar with the comics flocked to see it looking for laughs - and they certainly came in abundance - but there was one moment in the movie that was actually rather terrifying. After Jim Carrey's Stanley Ipkiss had spent the rest of the movie dancing, singing and acting very cartoonish whilst wearing the Mask, it fell in to the hands of the movie's antagonist Dorian Tyrell. Tyrell is a mafia gangster and, unlike Ipkiss, the Mask didn't bring him out of his shell - it just made him into even more of a monster than he was prior to donning it. Instead of appearing like a friendly cartoon character, he looked more like a murderous Frankenstein's monster and his voice voice deepened to a bestial tone. He killed mercilessly until he was tricked in to removing it - to the relief of everyone watching.
