7. Krypton Returns - Superman Returns

The Set-Up

Despite the fact that Lex Luthor's silly New Krypton plan was thwarted in Superman Returns when the Blue Boy Scout used his heat vision to remove the "new continent" made from rock and kryptonite and throw it into space, that wasn't the end of the landmass.

After it was thrown into space, the mass continued to grow and settled into orbit between Mars and Jupiter, where it would have been a key plot point in the sequel (which was planned to include Brainiac and Bizarro).

But Then...

Superman Returns might have received positive critical responses, but the studios were disappeaointed. As Warner Bros. President Alan F. Horn explained, it SHOULD "have done $500 million worldwide. We should have had perhaps a little more action to satisfy the young male crowd."

That and Warner Bros' unhappiness with how the character was "positioned" killed the sequel's chances of ever being made, unfortunately, and Warner Bros instead moved onto plans to reboot the characrer instead.
