10 Comic Book Movie Villains Who Were Universally Loved

10. Danny DeVito's Penguin

Danny DeVito's Penguin portrayal was one that was very much a Tim Burton re-imagining of the character. He is, perhaps, the darkest, most disgusting villain ever portrayed in the Batman franchise. His foul snorts during his crass attempts at sexual seduction directed at Catwoman and the awful image of him biting the nose off one of his political supporters were utterly vile. DeVito gave Penguin an essence of unpredictability but it wasn't the Penguin we know €“ however, people didn't seem to mind. This Penguin was dangerous with a sinister ulterior motive (and he had deformed hands and ate raw fish), but he still had a childlike innocence about him and came across as quite vulnerable and even likeable at times. People even sympathised with him. DeVito wore a body suit and had his face covered in prosthetics on a daily basis for the role, and it actually landed him a nomination for a Raspberry Award for Worst Supporting Actor (Tom Selleck 'beat' him though, for his role as King Ferdinand V in Christopher Columbus: The Discovery). That was a very harsh move, however, as fans loved it and his popularity hasn't waivered over the years. Indeed, his popularity may have even improved, as people appreciate the performance more and more, which just about allows him to squeeze on to this list by the skin of his nasty teeth.
