10 Comic Book Movies Hollywood Didn't Have The Balls To Make

4. Magneto: Testament

For anyone who's ever wondered how Magneto became such a relentless force of hatred, look no further than Greg Pak's harrowing Magneto: Testament - a 2008 comic series which chronicles his growing up as a Jew in Germany and the experiences in Auschwitz that ultimately shaped him as a supervillain.

Even though this comic run stands as a brave and unprecedented entry in the Marvel canon, it's not exactly tough to drum up a list of reasons why Testament has never made it to the big screen. Despite its standing as a superhero comic, there are no big set-pieces or action scenes, nor are there any of the cathartic moments you'd expect where Magneto unleashes his powers upon his enemies, socking it to the Nazis.

Instead, Testament is pitched as a grim portrait of life in a World War II concentration camp - one that just happens to feature Magneto as the main character. Whether or not movie-goers would buy into that... well, it could go either way, which is presumably the reason why 20th Century Fox have been too afraid to pursue it.

Back in 2004, a kind of precursor to this comic, a film billed as "The Pianist meets X-Men," was announced by the studio. Set to star Ian McKellen, fans were drip-fed morsels of information regarding its status over the years, but when X-Men: The Last Stand failed to impress the critics, it lost traction and simply disappeared.
