Whose idea was it to give Spider-Man to Sony in the first place? Absolutely crazy. In recent years, Spider-Man has not only maintained his position as Marvel's most popular character, he has also become a pivotal member of the Avengers, so for Marvel to have ever allowed the rights to his live action movies to be given to a different studio from his fellow "Earth's mightiest heroes" was an insane decision - even prior to knowing how successful Iron Man and company were going to be on the big screen. Moreover, as soon as Marvel realised that an Avengers movie was on the cards, they should have done absolutely everything in their power - regardless of cost - to get the character over to Marvel Studios. Had Spider-Man been in the Avengers movie, it would have undoubtedly gone on to become the highest-grossing movie of all time. It's as simple as that (as it stands, it's the third highest - and by some distance behind Titanic and, in particular, Avatar).
